?? Hi. I'm Juditova. In this blog post, I'm going to share some of my experiences when I traveled to Turkey from 2019 – 2020 in the trip that I call “Tomebamba – Bosphorus 2019”. Safety in this country is one of its many virtues. I lived in Ankara, its capital.
?? Hola. Soy Juditova. En esta entrada del blog, voy a compartir algunas de mis experiencias cuando viajé a Turquía desde el 2019 al 2020 en el viaje que llamo “Tomebamba – Bósforo 2019”. La seguridad en este país es una de sus muchas virtudes.

Safety when you walk
?? This is the most spread-out and the one that you will notice first. I remembered walking everywhere, taking the metro or dolmuş without worrying to be pickpocketed or being robbed. I used to go to a party in the disco and return at 2am by foot without worrying at all. Comparing to other countries, I feel that the safety is not necessary due of the repression of its police, but to the culture of the people.
?? Este es el más difundido y el primero que notarás. Recuerdo caminar por todo lugar, tomar el metro o dolmuş sin preocuparme por carteristas o ladrones. Yo solía ir a una fiesta en la discoteca y regresar a pie a las 2 de la mañana sin preocuparme para nada. Comparando con otros países, yo siento que la seguridad no es necesariamente por la represión de su policía, sino por la cultura de las personas.
Comparing to a previous experience
?? I lived in Germany before, in 2008 and 2009, and you can feel a similar air of safety in the streets. Even though, it is not as authentic as the one that it is felt on Turkey. There are more thefts (without violence) than actual assaults, for sure; one of the most spread-out examples: bicycle thefts.
?? Yo viví antes en Alemania, en el 2008 y 2009, y tú puedes sentir un aire similar de seguridad en las calles. Aún así, no es tan auténtico como el que es sentido en Turquía. Hay más hurtos (sin violencia) que asaltos, seguro que sí; uno de los más difundidos: robo de bicicletas.
?? I have lived most of my life in Ecuador and there is no such comparison point of safety. It depends in the province where you live. For example, you feel a natural paranoia if you are walking after 7pm; there is a chance that you get robbed. The safety is usually proportional to the amount of people walking on that street. But this an entire chapter by itself.
?? He vivido la mayoría de mi vida en Ecuador y no hay tal punto de comparación. Depende de la provincia donde vivas. Por ejemplo, tú sientes una paranoia natural si estás caminando después de las 7pm; existe una probabilidad que seas robado. La seguridad es usualmente proporcional a la cantidad de gente en la calle. Pero esto es para un capítulo entero por sí sólo.
Safety when you buy in the street
?? Many shops have their products outside the actual store. For example, a neighborhood store locate the ice cream, potato chips, newspaper and other goods completely outside. It turns out that people check out a product that they want to buy, they grab it (nobody is watching) and they go inside and pay.
?? Muchas tiendas tienen sus productos fuera de la tienda. Por ejemplo, una tienda de barrio ubican el helado, las papas fritas, el periódico y otros bienes completamente fuera. Resulta ser que la gente inspecciona un producto que quiere comprar, lo toman (nadie está viendo) y van adentro de la tienda para pagar.
But it isn't like this everywhere
?? Unfortunately, this is reality is different in many countries around the world, including mine. Many, MANY stores have their goods inside to prevent theft. Many people have the vice to steal or take it away, for whatever reason (as sport or to take advantage of somebody else).
?? Desafortunadamente, esta es una realidad diferente en muchos países alrededor del mundo, incluyendo el mío. Muchas, MUCHAS tiendas tienen sus bienes dentro para evitar robos. Muchas gente tiene el vicio de robar o llevarse por cualquier razón (como deporte o para tomar ventaja de los demás).
Safety when you ride the bus, metro or dolmuş
?? There is a term in german (because germans are very funny inventing terms) called ‘Schwarzfahren‘, which means literally “riding black”. This happens you get in a train, bus or any other public transportation vehicle and you don’t pay for the ticket. There are inspectors who, from time to time, they check if everybody inside the vehicle have bought the corresponding tickets. If someone haven’t, this person have a punishment like paying a fine.
?? Existe un término en alemán (porque los alemanes son muy divertidos al crear términos) llamado ‘Schwarzfahren‘, que quiere decir “viajar negro”. Esto ocurre cuando viajas en tren, bus u otro transporte público y no pagas por el boleto. Existen inspectores quienes, de vez en cuando, revisan si la gente ha pagado su boleto. Si alguien no lo hizo, reciben un castigo como pagar una multa.
What if there were no inspector?
?? I found out something amazing about turkish buses. ‘Almost' everyone pays their buses tickets and there aren’t inspectors checking if someone didn’t. Two Italians friends rode with me once on the bus before they bought their bus cards. They were expecting to have problems if you inspector eventually showed up but I told them “There isn't such guy since it is expected that everyone does it“.
?? Descubrí algo asombroso en los buses turcos. ‘Casi' todos pagan por tu boleto y no hay inspectores revisando si alguien no lo hizo. 2 amigos italianos viajaron conmigo en un bus una vez antes que ellos compraran sus tarjetas de bus. Ellos estaban esperando tener problema con el inspector si asomaba eventualmente pero les conté “No hay ese tipo ya que se espera que todos lo hagan“.
?? What if you enter the bus by the rear entrance? Then you go by the bus driver and pay. What if the bus is full and you can’t come close? Then you ask a stranger to grab your card and then he passes to the next one, and so on, until a person pays the card and then it comes back to you the same way it went away.
?? ¿Qué pasa si entras al bus desde la puerta trasera? Entonces te acercas a pagar cerca del conductor. ¿Qué pasa si el bus está lleno y no puedes acercarte a pagar? Entonces pides a un extraño que tome tu tarjeta y la pase al siguiente, y así, hasta que una persona pague con tu tarjeta y ésta regresa de la misma manera que se fue.
It works!
?? When I have done that, I just have to memorize the last digits of my card (so I don’t mix it with somebody’s else). Of course, I am speaking from my experience in Ankara here.
?? Cuando yo he hecho esto, sólo debo memorizar los últimos dígitos de mi tarjeta (para que no se confunda con otras tarjetas). Por supuesto, estoy hablando de mi experiencia en Ankara.
Safety with a lost an object
Money lost? No problem
?? In Latin America, if you drop a coin on the street I bet you that if somebody finds it, he or she will keep it for him- or herself. On the contrary, in Turkey you can expect that it will remain on the ground for far longer time.
?? En Latinoamérica, si sueltas una moneda en la calle te apuesto que si alguien la encuentra, se la queda para sí mismo. Al contrario, en Turquía puedes esperar que permanecerá en el suelo por mucho más tiempo.
?? I was once on a disco in Ankara (the capital) and I realized that there were 2 coins on the ground. After 1 hour, the coins were still there. Nobody bent down to pick them up because in their culture it's present “If it is not you may not take them”.
?? Una vez estuve en una discoteca en Ankara (la capital) y me di cuenta que habían 2 monedas en el suelo. Después de 1 hora, las monedas todavía estaban ahí. Nadie había las recogido porque en su cultura está presente “Si no es tuyo, no debes tomarlas”.
Conclusion
?? In this sense, I feel Turkey safer than many countries. Before traveling here, I was in Spain and Germany for a short trip. Although you can also walk in the night safely, you can still experience pickpocketing at seldom times. For me, there is this “common honesty” attached to the culture.
?? En este sentido, siento que Turquía en más seguro que muchos países. Antes de viajar aquí, estuve en España y Alemania durante un corto viaje. Aunque tú puedes viajar por la noche seguro, todavía puedes encontrarte con carteristas en alguna ocasión. Para mí, existe esta “honestidad común” adyacente en la cultura.
