Identity Documents

Documents for Traveling passport
Passports

The document for traveling depends entirely on the country where you are going. Some of them are:

It corresponds to the Foreign Affair's Ministry or Chancellor's Office from your country and the relationship that they have with other countries.

This matter is out of your control. All you have to do is find out the requirements that your target country has to your country. They are typically exhibited in a website. For example, this website shows which countries an Ecuadorian can travel without any visa. I can go to Colombia with just my ID card (emitted by the state) or to Russia or Turkey with just my passport (no previous arrangement or notification required). However, to go to United States I need a passport with a visa.

Police Register

If you are going to work with children or have a degree of responsibilities with other people in your target country, this document will help you to get a job or to make an institution to trust you more. Among the documents for traveling, not the most important

Health

Vaccines

Make sure that you have all the vaccines that the target country asks you for (if any). For example, Brazil requires (or they did so for many years) the tourists to be vaccinated from the Yellow Fever before entering the country.

Insurance

We can have an accident or need medical assistance while we are away in a foreign country where you probably know less people than in your home country. Get serious about this topic.

Some countries will demand that you have the insurance before entering the country as a requirement. If you apply a residence permit or extend your existing one, make sure to buy a insurance that matches the days of your stay.

Blood Type

After you decide which insurance you are going to buy, take with you the certificate of your blood type with you. I hope you don't need a blood transfusion while you are away from home.

Education

If you are aboard to study or for work, it's a great idea to carry with your high-school or university degree with you. You don't know when you are going to need them. Do you imagine calling your mother overseas to send you or scan a copy of them?

Certificates

CV, courses diplomas, language certificates and other related papers will become documents for traveling by themselves.

Work

If you can prove that you have worked somewhere else and therefore you have experience in the related profession. It will ease to get a job in a foreign country where nobody knows you.

Letter of Recommendation

If someone with prestige or in a position of power can give you this document, it will give your next boss or collaborators more social proof and therefore higher chance to be hired.

Transportation Tickets

Before reading further, check out my guide to finding cheaper flights. I bet you will find it useful.

Without the airplane, train or bus tickets, you can't get to anywhere! Perhaps among the documents for traveling the most important. Bear in mind this few items so don't get unpleasant surprises later:

  • Buy the ticket after you get the visa or residence permit.
  • Make sure that you know how much baggage you are allowed to take.
  • Write down your whole name of the ticket.

Have Contact with the Embassy

Any stay in a country longer than 3 months, should be notified to the corresponding embassy from you country. It doesn't matter if the embassy is located in another city. Consider that they are a bond between you and your homeland (Relatives, duty, documentation, etc). If something bad happens to you, they could notify your relatives about this.

Banking

If you are going to use the credit card from your home while traveling away, notify your bank in which countries you are going to be. Here is an example of a letter (e-mail actually) from me to my bank.

Good Morning,

I, Juditova with ID card number 0123456789, want to register the use of my credit card that ends in 3210 in the following countries:

+Turkey: (from date A to date B).
+Russia: (from date B to date C).
+United States: (from date C to date D).
+Ecuador: (from date D to date E).

Please, authorize my credit card for possible purchases in these countries, only in the specified dates.

Best Regards,

Juditova.

Does your bank asks your for authenticator, a validation coordinate card or any two step process? Since you can't visit your bank anymore while you are away, make sure that you take with you everything that you need.

Also check the expiry date of your credit card; you know… just in case…
